One of the things that makes Stuart Hunt's "Twice Surreal" so compelling is the author's voice. He relates events that are staggering and haunting, but at no time does the author wallow in the misery he is suffering. The clear and straightforward telling of his story--of serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a flyer in World War II and as a Forward Observer in the terrible Korea conflict--takes this story beyond a mere "war story". It is a tale of survival and courage, but at no time does the author bemoan his state or attempt to manipulate the reader's emotions. And that makes it at once heartbreaking and inspiring. I can't recommend it highly enough. Yes, there are many stories of war and movies as well--including "The Great Escape", the Hollywooded version of the events that took place in the camp where Hunt was held prisoner, Stalag Luft III. Somehow, however, Hunt's story is a fresh and needed take on the horrors of that time in history--and I agree with the reviewer that this should be a movie.Read this book. It is unforgettable, hard at times, and uplifting.

Superb book by a hero from "The Greatest Generation". A real life experience that would remind you of the sacrifice these men made in World War II and in Korea. They answered the call without complaining. They faced great odds against them but they did not give up. They save the world.
This book has been written in a most personal and compelling way. I could feel and identify with Stuart Hunt's experiences. It really made me marvel at what a person is able to endure and to survive. He brought home to me in a very dramatic fashion what his life was like as a young man in the military in both World War II and Korea.
This read was great! A true hero from 'The Great Generation'. Everyone should read this book for a real WWII experience and then the Korean War. You won't put it down. Would make a amazing movie too.
I found this book a very interesting read. Mr. Hunt's experiences in WWII and Korea are presented in great detail. Although I was in the "Peace Time" army, I could relate to many of the military situations that he encountered. I recommend "Twice Surreal" for anyone who has served in the military during "War Time" or "Peace time".
You have to read this book. Just wondering what was going to happen next, I couldn't put it down. I went through it in two days. It is hard to imagine that someone could go through so much and still survive. Great reading.
This was a fantastic book written by a true hero. A great story about Canadian born Stuart Hunt who served for the RCAF in WWII and was shot down over Belgium. He alluded the Germans until captured and sent to Stalag Luft III. Towards the end of the war, and with Germany falling apart, he was one of the airmen sent on the Long March in freezing temperatures. Barely surviving, he was able to return home. He was transfered into the US Army as a reserve and when the Korean War began he was activated and deployed as a Forward Observer behind enemy lines. Incredibly engaging, this is a book that you just can't put down.
