Like the novels of Jojo Moyes, Liane Moriarity, Barbara Delinsky, this is a contemporary woman's novel that resonates with heart-felt impact and insight.
Vivienne Bastain's life is an emotional roller-coaster ride, taking her from San Francisco to Paris to New York, with one constant her mother Denise who is psychopathically needy for a love that will not leave her. This need goes beyond control to dangerous duplicity, destroying her daughter's sense of self, making her easy prey for manipulation and betrayal by others.
Vivienne becomes a celebrated jewelry designer; along the way are three men, two of whom sully the word 'love' due to their own warped insecurities, and one, Jack, who loves her truly but cannot penetrate the wall of self-protection she has built around herself.
Then there is her 'best friend', a woman who is dying a slow death of jealousy until she has no choice but to strike out--and strike hard.
Here is a story about secrets, about lies, about family. About self-discovery and strength. About bad choices and wise decisions. Most of all, this is a story about love, defined differently by those who feel it and those who abuse it.

Susanne's Jaffe's new book is such a rewarding read! From San Francisco to New York to Paris, the action never lets down, and just when you think you're near the end, there's a new surprise. You know what you hope for, but you're never sure her protagonist will make the right choices. Ms. Jaffe writes with clarity, a real knowledge of place, and excellent pacing. The characters are fully fleshed out, and even though there are many of them, there's never any confusion about who, what, and where. I recommend this book highly.Product details

Her Mother Daughter edition by Susanne Jaffe Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Jaffe is a master at description. She can paint a picture in a couple of sentences so that the reader can visualize what is being described without it getting the way of the plot. Very engrossing book. I highly recommend it.
I need to connect to the characters, I really didn't like anyone, they were all selfish & self absorbed.
Colorful characters, mother-daughter tension, subterfuge, jealousy, romance - it's all there in this tale that takes the young Vivienne Bastain from San Francisco to Paris to New York, as she builds her career as a jewelry designer and hopes for a true love she feels unworthy of finding. I'd highly recommend this book - and Susanne Jaffe's engaging writing style.
Susanne Jaffe’s fine novel, HER MOTHER’S DAUGHTER, kept me up at night, actually two nights! I could not wait to find out where Vivienne’s life would lead and finally rest. The twists and turns kept me engaged throughout. She was surrounded by consistently supportive people and consistently conniving ones, each well developed and believable! I followed her across the world as she struggled to discover who she really was and who she could actually trust. This is a truly riveting and compelling book!
I could not put this book down. The complex characters and relationships intertwined throughout the drama and suspense of this story kept me spellbound. Envisioning the high fashion lifestyle lived by a chosen few in Paris, New York and San Francisco made the novel even more delicious. Setting, plot, character twists and descriptions are flawless. Very well done. I can't wait to read another Susanne Jaffe novel!
This is a terrific read. (And it would make a great movie, too!) From the intriguing Prologue to the satisfying Epilogue, I was hooked. This compelling narrative of a distorted mother-daughter relationship travels from Paris to San Francisco to New York, pausing along the way for romance, suspense, and jewelry design. The character development is exquisite I either loved or hated every one of the characters. Ms. Jaffe's writing style is especially remarkable, since I am not normally drawn to psychological tension throughout a novel. It was an amazing ride; I couldn't wait to read how the innocent protagonist would handle the cruel manipulations that surrounded her.
Her Mother’s Daughter is a brilliant alchemy of women’s fiction, fine travel writing, and a psychiatric study of the toxic impact every child of a narcissistic mother suffers. Using silky threads of intimacy, the web Denise has cast ensnares both her daughter Vivienne, who exists only as an extension of herself, and the reader. The body language, tone of voice, and disapproving looks have worked for many years, but Vivienne’s artistic gifts send her out into the world, just out of her mother’s grasp.
All young women have to learn to navigate the waters of men and relationships, but when the journey is complicated by manipulation and pathological scheming from a Machiavellian mother, the waters are anything but smooth. Jaffe spends time to nail down the story’s physical settings from Paris and Nob Hill to Manhattan, while never neglecting its psychological environment. I came looking for a holiday read…and got the unexpected gift of a smart psychological thriller wrapped in romance, which I highly recommend!
